An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman F3F-2 carrier fighter biplane in 1:48 scale from Academy. It is a rebox of the proven injection tooling originally developed by Accurate Miniatures, which Academy supplements with its own packaging. According to the available data the set holds sprues of light gray plastic and clear parts, a photo-etched part (a photo-etched brass fret), water-slide decals and a mask. Check the exact contents of the package and the number of marking schemes on the packaging.
The Grumman F3F was the last biplane fighter of the US Navy and one of the last fighter biplanes anywhere. It served in the second half of the 1930s, still before the monoplane fighters came in. The F3F-2 version received a more powerful Wright radial and represented the peak of the family's development. Characteristic features were the retracting landing gear, an all-metal fuselage with fabric-covered wings and a sturdy structure suited to carrier operations.
Cut the parts from the sprues and glue the clean joints with thin modeling cement for plastic. On a biplane, take care over the correct alignment of the upper wing and the struts; a simple guide template made up beforehand helps. Glue the canopy glazing with canopy glue and make use of the enclosed mask. Lay down a primer before painting, ideally from an airbrush. Prewar US Navy machines as a rule carried conspicuous colored markings, such as yellow wing surfaces and colored bands; lay the decals on after gloss varnish and bring the panel lines out with a fine wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
