The set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of Obrnice near Most replaces the main landing gear wheels on a plastic model of the FM-1 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model in its own right but an add-on that is fitted into a model already under construction. A resin wheel is cast in one piece, so the parting line in the middle of the tire that a two-part plastic wheel has falls away, and the fine tread pattern and the shape of the sidewall stand out considerably better.
The FM-1 Wildcat is the licensed version of the Grumman F4F-4 carrier fighter, which the Eastern Aircraft division of the General Motors group built during the war so that Grumman's production capacity would be freed for the Hellcat. Against the F4F-4 the FM-1 had its wing armament reduced from six to four machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber and more rounds per gun. The machines served mainly from the decks of escort carriers and in the Fleet Air Arm under the designation Martlet Mk.V. The Wildcat has a narrow-track main undercarriage that is retracted by hand into the sides of the fuselage, and in the retracted state the wheels stay partly visible, so they are conspicuous from all sides on a finished model.
First wash the parts with lukewarm water and detergent, so that no residues of mold release stay on the surface and the paint holds. Separate them from the casting block with a thin file or a cutting disc, clean the cut face up and fit them with super glue, which is more reliable on resin than the classic cement for plastic. Before painting use a filler primer, spray the wheel hub and the tire separately and divide the boundary with a masking disc or a template. A slightly flat shade brightened with a dust pigment suits a tire.
