About product

The M38 helmet for paratroopers, 1:48 scale

This item is an accessory for figures in 1:48 scale — it is not a kit of a model. It contains a casting of the German paratrooper helmet of the M38 pattern, that is the helmet on its own, which can be fitted onto a figure's head, laid beside it on the base of a diorama or attached to loaded equipment in a vehicle. The casting is sharper in shape than the helmets that tend to be part of ordinary injected sets of figures.

The real subject

The German paratrooper helmet of the 1938 pattern is based on the shape of the ordinary infantry steel helmet, but it has a cut-back edge — it lacks the protruding visor over the brow and the extended nape section. The lower silhouette was practical because the edge did not catch the airflow and did not get in the way during a landing and while moving in a confined space. The helmet also differs from the infantry one in its attachment: the inner fitting is cushioned and the strap is multi-point, so that the helmet holds firmly on the head. Given its different outline, the M38 is easily recognizable on a model even in a small scale.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Separate the casting from the casting block with a fine saw, level the surface left after the cut with a file and try dry how the helmet seats on the figure's head or on the surface you want to lay it on. With resin parts use super glue; glue for plastic does not hold on them. Before painting, wash the part in lukewarm water with a detergent, so that the paint does not hold only in places because of the release agent from the mold. Apply a thin layer of base coat, spray the surface of the helmet with an airbrush or a soft brush and then accentuate the edge and the straps with a dark wash. A dry brush on the edge of the rim will give the casting the depth that would otherwise not be visible in 1:48 scale.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas who need the correct shape of a paratrooper helmet in 1:48.
  • Converters of figures for whom the helmet from the original kit does not suit.
  • Modelers completing a scene with loosely set-aside equipment.
  • Anyone who wants to raise the level of detail of figures in a small scale.

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Paints, glue and further parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an accessory. The casting represents the helmet on its own in 1:48 scale; the figure and its parts are not included in the package.

It has a cut-back edge with no protruding visor and no extended nape, so it has a lower and smoother outline. The attachment on the head is firmer.

Level the surface left after the cut with a file, try the fit dry and glue the resin casting with super glue.

Check the number of pieces on the packaging.
