I-16 vacuform canopy, early version (1:48, Clear Prop Models)

A vacuum-formed (vacuform) clear canopy in 1:48 scale from Clear Prop Models. It is not a model aircraft but a separate replacement cockpit canopy intended for models of the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter in its early version. The thin-walled, clear molding offers finer framing and better optics than thicker injection-molded parts and makes it possible to display the cockpit open.

Building and painting tips

Cut the part out carefully with a sharp knife close to the outline and finish it with fine abrasive paper and polish. Vacuform canopies are bonded with a clear adhesive for glazing or with super glue applied drop by drop. Mask the frames and spray in this order: interior first, then the outer color. Because the material is thin, it pays to allow yourself several attempts at the cutting.
