A Big Ed bundle from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a model of the Ilyushin Il-2 in the mod. 1943 form in 1:48 scale. The Il-2 was a single-engine attack aircraft with an armored forward fuselage that served as the load-bearing structure; the 1943 form corresponds to the two-seat version with a gunner. The bundle brings together several separately sold accessory sets for one model. It is not a kit; the base kit is bought separately. Eduard also carries individual photo-etched sets and masks for the same type under very similar names; the individual sets are told apart by the exact designation of the series.
On an attack aircraft most of the extra work is concentrated in the cockpit, the landing gear bays and the surface details of the airframe, that is in the places for which the manufacturer issues separate sets. The bundle puts them together. The exact list of contents differs from bundle to bundle according to what was issued for the kit in question, and it is given on the packaging. Before building, sort the contents according to where each part belongs and at which stage it is fitted.
The difference between pre-painted and bare photo-etch is the commonest source of mistakes with bundles. The pre-painted parts already carry their color and printing, and any primer or opaque coat ruins them; do not prime them and do not sand them down. Bare photo-etch will not hold paint without a primer: degrease with alcohol, spray a thin coat of primer intended for metal, let it cure and only then paint. Mix the interior shade so that it suits the tone printed on the pre-painted parts; when the surroundings drift away, a part that does not match shows more than a missing detail. Bare photo-etch on the outer surface of the airframe is glued on before spraying, so that the same paint covers it as covers its surroundings, whereas pre-painted parts are fitted only after the surroundings have been sprayed and varnished. At the end one coat of matte varnish unifies the sheen.
