The markings are transferred onto a finished, sprayed and varnished model. They replace the hand painting of small insignia, numbers and legends, which are hard to mask at 1:48 scale, and it is usually the last step of a build before the final varnish and a light emphasis of the surface. Printing that is applied well holds the shape of the surface and its backing layer cannot be told on the model.
Go over the area under the motif with a gloss varnish, so the edges of the printing do not silver. Cut the motif out closely to the edge, soak it in lukewarm water and, once it has released from the backing, slide it onto the model. Blot the surplus water away with soft paper; on busy places a softener helps, and the motif is not moved afterward. Once dry, even the surface out with a varnish in the sheen you want. Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether it is a self-adhesive version: a soaked self-adhesive film is ruined. Store the sheet flat, dry and out of direct light.
