The Ju 52 is among the most easily recognized aircraft there are. It carries three radial engines, one in the nose and two on the wing, and its whole surface is of corrugated duralumin, which gave the thin skin stiffness. The machine came about as a transport aircraft and served in that role in uniform too: it carried soldiers, cargo and the wounded and stayed in service long after the war. On it the modeler deals above all with the surface, because corrugation changes everything he is used to from smooth airframes.
A corrugated surface is a test for any self-adhesive mask: the film holds on the peaks, lifts in the hollows and the paint creeps in exactly there. Spray the insignia therefore in weak coats from a distance, square to the surface, and beforehand press the edge carefully into every hollow with a blunt point. On the cockpit the situation is easier; there the glass is smooth.
They are an outer and an inner mask for the glazing and four sets of national insignia masks, that is the highest number in this whole range. It matches a large machine with markings on the fuselage and on both surfaces of the wing.
Only after the films are off does the accentuating of the corrugation with a dark filter come along, which gives the surface depth. Insignia sprayed in paint need not fear it. A decal at such a moment would risk having its edge lifted out of a hollow and liquid running under the carrier film. On such a large airframe, where the markings lie on long areas of corrugated metal, it is precisely this difference that decides how the model turns out.
