An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese twin-engine, two-seat heavy fighter Kawasaki Ki-45 Kai Toryu, known to the Allies under the code name Nick. The 1:48 scale model is made by the Japanese brand Hasegawa. The box contains parts in gray plastic, a decal sheet and assembly instructions; it is a classic representation of a period aircraft in the Tei variant, the late form.
The Ki-45 Toryu, meaning dragon slayer, was a twin-engine multipurpose fighter of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. It was created as a long-range heavy fighter and during the war it also served for attacks on ground targets and as a night fighter against Allied bombers. The crew consisted of two men, a pilot and a gunner. The machine was powered by a pair of radial engines and carried heavy cannon and machine gun armament, which made it one of the feared interceptors of the final part of the war.
On a two-seat cockpit, pay attention to the interior and its painting before you close up the fuselage and attach the glazing, because the details are harder to reach once it is assembled. It pays to mask the extensive canopy glazing (with a cut mask or with masking tape, for example) so that the framing stays sharp. Assemble the engine nacelles, the landing gear bays and any external stores carefully. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, treat the surface with a primer before painting and lay the shades on ideally with an airbrush. Japanese army finishes tend to be a combination of gray-green and brown-green tones with the national insignia.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
