About product

Art Scale 1:48 Ki-27 Nate, a double-sided masking set

Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a Nakajima Ki-27 model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit or a part of the model but an aid for painting: the masks are stuck onto the canopy glass, the framing is sprayed and, once they are lifted off, a clean clear area is left underneath. The name states the double-sided version, that is masks prepared for the outer and the inner side of the glazing. The inner masks let you spray the frames from the inside in the interior color, so that the cockpit looks right when you look into it, and at the same time they protect the glass from the inside while you spray the interior of the fuselage. A single-sided version that covers only the outer side is also made for the same aircraft.

Preparing the clear part decides

Most trouble with masks arises not during spraying but before it. Wash the clear part in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap, rinse it and let it dry freely on a paper towel, so that no grease from the mold and no fingerprints are left on the glass. From then on, touch the part only by its edges or with gloves on. Lay the mask on a perfectly dry surface, press it down with a stick from the center toward the edges and press the edges down thoroughly, because that is exactly where paint runs under. The set is cut for the Hasegawa Ki-27 kit, so the parts match the shape of its glazing and nothing has to be measured or cut.

The real subject

The Nakajima Ki-27, known to the Allies under the code name Nate, was a Japanese single-seat fighter with fixed, aerodynamically faired landing gear and a long glazed canopy. It is that canopy that matters to the modeler: it has a great many narrow frames, and cutting them out of tape by hand is a lengthy job. Pre-cut masks remove that part of the work.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want sharp canopy framing without cutting tape by hand.
  • Builders bothered by frames showing from the inside in a different color from the interior.
  • Anyone who builds Japanese aircraft and wants the glazing finished quickly and cleanly.

Paints, varnish and the kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set for painting, that is an accessory for a kit. The package contains neither the Ki-27 model itself nor paints.

That the set contains masks for the outer and the inner side of the glazing. You can then spray the frames from the inside in the interior color, and the glass is protected from both sides while you spray the cockpit.

It is worth doing. Mold release residue and grease from your fingers make the mask hold less well, and paint then runs under the edge. Lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and free drying are enough.

The single-sided version covers only the outer side of the glazing. The double-sided one also contains masks for the inner side.
