A latrine 1:48 is a cast diorama accessory from the Czech maker Hauler. It is not a model kit but a small structure of the kind that belonged to field camps, yards and the back areas of airfields.

The accessory represents a latrine, that is, a simple wooden privy, in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft - it is a diorama object meant to complete a finished scene. Structures of this type stood at the edges of camps, by workshops, in yards and in the back areas of field airfields, and in a modeling scene they fill an important role: they give the setting a believable everydayness that equipment alone can never replace.
A latrine never belongs in the main place on a board - that is exactly why it is rewarding. Stand it aside, behind a building, at the edge of a wood or in a corner of the scene, where it closes off the view and suggests that the space continues beyond the edge of the base. Create a natural path to it, if only by a hint of trodden soil and missing grass. As a vertical object it balances low equipment and heaps of material well. In combination with figures a small, civilian action arises that pulls a diorama out of photographic bareness.
Wash the casting in water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the surfaces. Apply a thin primer. Build wood up in layers, not in a single coat: a base of middle gray-brown, the individual boards shifted toward warmer and cooler shades, then let a dark wash run into the seams and finally go over the edges by drybrushing in a lighter tone in the direction of the grain. Weathered wood tends to be gray rather than brown, so go easy on the warm shades. Darken the roof and suggest a green touch on it in the shaded part. Smooth the door jambs and the edges people touched with a lighter tone. From below add dust and mud with a pigment, and at the foot suggest a damp darker strip. Dull the whole with varnish and stick any grass or nettles on only at the end.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, terrain compounds and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
