About product

Pre-painted Zoom photo-etched set for the Lockheed P-38J Lightning in 1:48

This is a smaller photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard, not an airplane model. It belongs to the Zoom line, which means pre-painted photo-etched parts focused on what matters most in the cockpit: the instrument panel, the side consoles and the seat belts. The parts come with the color printed on, so you do not have to prime them or paint them laboriously, and the result is finished in a single evening. Against a full photo-etched set the Zoom has a narrower range, but it is the simplest way to get detail into the cockpit of a Lockheed P-38J Lightning model in 1:48 that a plastic casting cannot offer.

The real subject

The P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engined fighter of unusual twin-boom design with a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament. Liquid-cooled Allison engines with turbochargers supplied the power, thanks to which the aircraft held its performance at great altitude as well. The P-38J version differs from the older ones in a revised cooling arrangement with characteristically deeper fairings under the engines. The aircraft was used for fighter work, escort, reconnaissance and attacks on ground targets, especially in the Pacific and over Europe.

Building and painting tips

Do not paint the pre-painted parts over with an opaque color, as you would lose the printed detail. A fine dark wash into the recesses and a careful dry brush on the edges is enough. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin; excess glue would dull the printing. The plastic instrument panel of the model usually has to be sanded flat so that the metal part sits down. Bend the seat belts so that they look loose rather than taut. Finish the whole cockpit before you close the fuselage nacelle up.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a quick and visible cockpit upgrade without painting
  • Those who are starting out with photo-etched parts
  • Anyone interested in American Second World War fighters in 1:48
  • Builders of a model with an open cockpit

The set is neither a model nor a kit; it is an add-on to a model sold separately. Glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

At Eduard, Zoom is a smaller pre-painted photo-etched set focused on the most conspicuous items in the cockpit. The parts already have the color printed on.

No. Pre-painted parts are left as they are; only a fine wash and a careful dry brush can be recommended.

No. It is a detail set, that is an add-on to a plastic model of the P-38J in 1:48, which is sold separately.

Yes, the Zoom line is a good choice for a first go at photo-etching. You need a sharp scalpel, tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue.
