Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks for the model of the reconnaissance airplane Dornier Do 215B-4 in 1:48 scale, in the most comprehensive step of the range. The set goes beyond the basic level: besides the frames of the glazing and the wheels it holds further masks for taking the model further. It is the version for a builder who wants masking solved completely and does not want to make anything up with tape cut by hand. It follows the dimensions of the ICM 48241 kit.

Thin frames and how to keep them crisp

The commonest reason why a sprayed frame looks bad is not an inaccurate mask but paint that has run under it. On very thin frames the gap between the mask and the plastic is barely visible and a single heavier coat is enough for the paint to get under the edge. The reliable procedure is to seal the edge: once the masks are applied, spray a very thin coat of the shade that lies under the mask, let it dry and only then lay the target color on. Anything that runs under is then filled with the same color as the one under the mask and stays invisible.

The real subject

The Do 215 was a twin-engine airplane derived from the Dornier Do 17, powered by inline engines. The B-4 version served for reconnaissance and carried photographic equipment. The production run was small, so it is a marginal type, but thanks to its slender fuselage and glazed nose it is one of the rewarding ones for modelers.

Procedure

• Deal with the inner sides of the glazing first and only then with the outside
• Seal the edge of the mask with a thin coat of the base shade
• Lay the target color on perpendicular, in three or four light coats
• Take the mask off once the paint has set, not after it has cured completely
• Repair small runs under the edge with a brush and a very small amount of paint, not with another spray coat
