1:48 Mask L-39MS/L-59 Sup.Albatros EXPERT (TRUMP)

1:48 L-39MS/L-59 Super Albatros EXPERT masks (New Ware)

Pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the L-39MS, in export designation the L-59 Super Albatros, in 1:48 scale. The EXPERT grade is the widest variant of the New Ware range and masks more than just the main glazing. The templates are cut to the shape of the Trumpeter kit, so they go straight into place with no measuring and no extra trimming.

The real subject

The Super Albatros is a thoroughly reworked development stage of the L-39 jet trainer of Czech production. It received a more powerful engine, a strengthened airframe structure and modernized avionics, so that besides training it could handle light combat duties as well. The export version carried the designation L-59. A characteristic feature remained the long glazing of the tandem cockpit with two separate canopy sections above the instructor and the pupil.

Thin framing and accuracy of finish

The glazing of the tandem cockpit is long on this subject and the framing is thin, and thin framing is exactly where hand masking falls apart. A knife slips easily on a curved clear part, tape breaks up in a curve and the resulting width differs from place to place. A pre-cut mask holds the same width along the whole length of the cockpit and on both canopy sections, so the model looks uniform. When spraying, work in thin coats and straight down from above. Trainer aircraft usually carry bold color markings where several shades meet, so allow enough drying time between coats; otherwise a fresh layer is pulled off under a newly laid mask. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, slowly and at an angle over the edge.

Who the set is for

• Builders of Czech aviation subjects in 1:48 scale
• Modelers who want clean and equally wide framing on the long tandem cockpit
• Those who work with an airbrush and spray multicolor schemes
• Experienced modelers for whom masking the glazing alone is not enough

The package contains masking templates only. The kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
