The middle step of the mask range from the manufacturer New Ware in 1:48 scale. It holds self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the parts of the particular Hobby Boss 81713 kit. The ADVANCED designation describes the extent — the set goes further than the basic version and also covers areas away from the cockpit glazing itself.
The glazing is only one part of the work. On models being finished off, the wheels are commonly masked as well, where the tire is to be in a different shade from the rim, along with areas where a multi-color scheme is sprayed. It is exactly here that a cut mask wins over tape: a circular opening for a rim is cut out by hand only with difficulty, and a lack of symmetry shows on a pair of wheels at once. In the same way, camouflage patterns with a crisp transition are sprayed repeatably with a mask, whereas cutting by hand gives a different result every time.
Work in the order in which you are finishing the model. First mask and spray the cockpit, then the base coat of the whole airframe, and only at the end details such as the wheels. Let the paint cure between coats, not merely dry to the touch — acrylic paints are usually resistant enough to the adhesive of a mask only after a longer time. Do not throw leftover masks away at once; small offcuts come in useful for patching places where the paint has run under.
