A sheet of waterslide decals from the manufacturer Xtradecal for models of the British version of the Phantom, designated FG.1, in 1:48 scale. It is standalone markings for finishing off a model that has been built, not a kit. The 1:48 scale is the most widespread for the Phantom, so the sheet will find a use with most builders of the type.
British Phantoms differed fundamentally from the American originals. Instead of the original engines they received Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans, which called for a wider rear fuselage and modified air intakes. The FG.1 version was intended for service aboard an aircraft carrier and had an extendable nose gear leg, which tilted the aircraft to a higher angle for a catapult launch. Later these machines passed to land-based air defense units. The schemes differed according to period, from darker camouflage patterns to the later gray finishes.
With the Phantom a great deal of work goes into weathering, so think the order of the steps out in advance. Apply the decals onto a gloss varnish before any emphasizing of the panel lines comes up, otherwise the solution from the wash will get under the carrier film and discolor it. Once dry, secure the decals with a further gloss coat and only then do the panel lines and the staining. A final matte or semi-matte varnish unifies the whole surface and the markings are drawn optically into the paint.
