MiG-23BN late exhaust nozzle, closed, in 1:48 scale is a resin replacement exhaust nozzle from Aires. It replaces the simplified plastic part and it is cast in the position with the petals closed.

A detail set in resin that replaces the exhaust nozzle of the engine on a model of the ground-attack version of the MiG-23 in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft but a replacement part that noticeably raises the fidelity of a finished model. The nozzle is made in the late production standard and cast in the position with the petals closed, that is as it looks on an aircraft standing on the ground with the engine shut down.
The MiG-23BN is the ground-attack version of the Soviet aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, intended for attacks on ground targets. It is told apart from the fighter versions by the sloped nose section without a large radar and by the fittings for carrying unguided as well as guided armament. The power comes from a turbojet with an afterburner, whose exhaust nozzle has movable petals that change the area according to the engine setting. It is the nozzle that is among the most conspicuous places on a model: it is completely exposed when seen from behind, and injection-molded plastic parts tend to be coarse and to have walls that are too thick.
Cut the part off the casting block with a saw, level the surface and check the fit in the fuselage dry; usually the inner edge of the plastic part has to be sanded back slightly. Wash the resin in soapy water before painting, so that the mold release agent disappears. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Metallic shades with heat staining suit the nozzle: apply the burnt blue, violet and brown tones sparingly and in thin coats, and graphite powder laid on with a finger will pull out the edges of the petals.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
