The year 1993 meant fifty years since the founding of the French escadron de chasse 3/3 with the traditional name Ardennes. The celebration was given to one of its Mirage IIIE machines, the aircraft with the tactical code 3-XT. Subtracting fifty years from the year given puts the beginning of the unit in 1943, that is in the time when the French Air Force was being rebuilt in North Africa.
The IIIE version was the most widespread and the most versatile in the Mirage III family. Against the IIIC fighter it had a lengthened fuselage, more capable navigation equipment and the ability to carry a heavier load under the fuselage and under the wings. It served above all for attacks on ground targets and in French colors it lasted in the front line until the 1990s, when the Mirage 2000 replaced it.
The notation 3-XT consists of the number of the escadre and a pair of letters allotted to a particular aircraft. The three at the start therefore does not denote an order but belonging to the third fighter escadre. On a model these markings appear on both sides of the fuselage and tend to be completed by the badges of the escadrille near the cabin.
The artwork is for the most part concentrated on the vertical tail surface, where it has a flat base, so applying it tends to be easy even for less experienced builders.
