A plastic kit of the Japanese floatplane fighter A6M2-N Rufe in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard, in the economy Weekend edition. That contains injection-molded plastic and a decal sheet but no photo-etch or masks — it is the basic form of the boxing for a plain plastic build. It is an injection-molded plastic model to be glued and painted.
The A6M2-N came from the conversion of the famous carrier fighter Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero into a floatplane version. Nakajima replaced the landing gear with a large central float and a pair of auxiliary floats under the wings. The aircraft was to provide fighter cover where there was no airfield — at forward island bases in the Pacific. It paid for the floats with a loss of performance, yet it proved itself an agile machine. It served in the defense of forward bases and in intercepting flying boats and did well in the difficult conditions of the island war. The Allies gave it the code name Rufe.
The key is seating the main float and the struts precisely and squarely — use a jig or template so the model stands straight. Work up the cockpit, as it is clearly visible. Mask the glazing before spraying (the Weekend edition includes no mask). The junction between the float and the struts tends to be a weak point — strengthen the joint, or reinforce it with a wire pin, so the model can carry its own weight. Pick out the panel lines with a wash and even everything out with a matte clear coat at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
