A set of stencils for painting the control surfaces of the Japanese Mitsubishi Ki-21 Ia Sally bomber in 1:48 scale. Intended for the ICM kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
Pre-cut self-adhesive stencils intended for a forty-eighth scale model of the Mitsubishi Ki-21 Ia Sally machine. They define the edges of the ailerons and of both control surfaces so that these can be set apart from the surrounding surface during painting. The target kit is ICM.
The Ki-21 came about in the middle of the 1930s as a heavy bomber for the Japanese Army Air Force and the Allies assigned it the code name Sally. The early Ia form carried Nakajima radial engines, a glazed nose and a dorsal gunner's position with a small cover. Deployment began over China and continued in Malaya, over Burma and in the Netherlands East Indies. As the war went on it fell behind in defensive armament and armor, so it moved to training and transport tasks, but it was among the types the Japanese army used the longest.
On a large airframe it pays to lay the work out in sections. Manage the tail surfaces first and only then move to the wing, otherwise it is easy to lose track of what you have already done. Apply the wing stencils working from the fuselage toward the tip, so that they follow one another parallel to the engraving. On sizeable wings it also pays to turn the model during the work and to keep checking the symmetry of the two halves.
