The lightest bomb of the American Mark 80 family: 1:48 MK-81 with MAU-94/B conical fin from AMMO of Mig Jimenez, underwing armament for finished aircraft models.
Responsibility details are not available.
The smallest member of the American Mark 80 family of unguided bombs in the version with a low-drag conical tail section. The set serves for hanging under the wings and the fuselage of a model you already have built.
The Mark 80 series came about in the 1950s as an answer to the arrival of jet aircraft: the bombs used until then had too much drag and complicated flight as speed rose. The new generation received a smooth, aerodynamically clean body and quickly became the standard of Western air forces. The lightest of the four is precisely the MK-81, used where a full load was needlessly large and the number of pieces hung mattered. The conical tail section keeps drag low and is intended for releases from greater altitude. It flew most over Southeast Asia, and later heavier calibers pushed it out of the main arsenal of the US Air Force.
First remove the mold release residue from the castings and let them dry. Cylindrical bodies are easy to spray, but that is exactly why every unevenness shows on them, so sand them smooth. Training rounds carried a blue finish, live ones an olive one with color rings that marked the type of filling. It is better to assemble the bomb racks and pylons before you glue the individual pieces on permanently.
The bombs come unpainted. The carrier, thinners and fixings are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.
