A set of Dead Design masks for spraying the cockpit frames of the Japanese floatplane fighter Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu in 1:48 scale.
The Kyofu, listed by the Allies as Rex, was a fighter on floats. The Imperial Japanese Navy counted on it to support landing operations where no airfield was ready yet. It carries one large central float and two auxiliary floats under the wings. It was from the design of the Kyofu that the land-based Shiden fighter then grew, so both aircraft have a related silhouette of fuselage and canopy.
The Kyofu has a fairly simple but markedly angular canopy with several straight bars and a low windscreen. Straight lines reveal every inaccuracy, because on them the eye notices even a fraction of a millimeter. On a floatplane, moreover, the color transition between the upper and the lower surface often meets the glazing, so it is good to have the boundaries firmly set.
Degreased, dry glass, the mask seated exactly on the frame, pressure around the perimeter and paint in two thin coats. If a little paint does get under the edge after all, carefully scrape the dried overrun off with the tip of a toothpick. That will not scratch the glass the way a scalpel does.
