An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese twin-engine night fighter Nakajima J1N1-Sa Gekko (the Allied code name Irving) in 1:48 scale from Tamiya. The kit captures the late form of the type — the J1N1-Sa, Type 11 Kou — with a faithfully rendered rear fuselage modified for three cannon and with the characteristic individual exhausts. The weapon cover can be built open or closed, so the weapon installation can be put on show. In the same way the canopy can be built open or closed to reveal the well-worked interior and equipment. The box holds parts for the variant with antennas and without them, two figures and decals for three marking variants.
The Nakajima J1N1 Gekko (meaning moonlight) was originally created as a long-range escort fighter, and in that role it failed. Only the conversion into a night fighter gave the type a purpose and made it a respected opponent. The key was the armament: cannon aimed obliquely upward. The fighter got underneath a bomber, where the defenders could not see, and fired up into its underside. The J1N1-Sa version carried three 20 mm cannon in the upper fuselage, inclined 30° upward; the earlier rendering also had cannon aimed obliquely downward, and those were dropped on this version. The Gekko was used among other things against American bombers. One point worth mentioning: the Germans arrived at the same solution of obliquely aimed cannon independently — on the Heinkel He 219 night fighter it was called Schräge Musik. Two sides of the war, the same idea.
It is glued with thin cement for plastic. Think in advance about whether you want the weapon cover and the canopy open; if so, it pays to invest time in the interior and the cannon and to add shades and fine accentuation. Finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage. Spray a primer; the dark green upper surfaces and the light underside are best done with an airbrush, and for the dividing line use soft masking or freehand spraying. Framing the extensive glazing is a slow job, and masks are not part of the package, so count on masking tape. Fit the antennas only at the end of the build.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
