A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard in 1:48 scale. A detail set for refining a model of the American twin-engine Lockheed P-38J Lightning fighter. The parts are etched from thin metal sheet and serve to replace and add the fine details that injection-molded plastic cannot capture faithfully. The set is an aftermarket accessory, not a stand-alone model: it is added to the corresponding plastic kit of the aircraft.
The P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter of the Second World War with its characteristic twin-boom construction and a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament. It was powered by two turbocharged Allison V-1710 engines. The P-38J version brought improved cooling and better performance at high altitude; it flew over Europe and in the Pacific, where the leading American fighter pilots achieved their successes on this type.
Photo-etched parts are separated with a sharp knife on a backing and bent with a bending tool or two rulers. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or a small amount of epoxy. On a twin-engine aircraft it pays to detail both engine nacelles and the landing gear bays before closing the fuselages up. Degrease the parts before painting; metal holds paint better once a primer has been applied.
This is a photo-etched detail accessory, not a model of the aircraft. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
