About product

P-40N in RAAF service - decals 1:48 (DK Decals)

The sheet is an accessory for a kit, not a stand-alone model. It is produced for 1:48 scale and its theme is defined by two things: a particular version of the aircraft, the Curtiss P-40N, and its user, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). How many schemes the sheet offers and whether it also contains national insignia or technical lettering is stated on its box.

The real subject

The P-40N was the last main production version of the whole Curtiss P-40 family. Structurally it came out of an effort to lighten the airframe and improve performance at greater altitudes; the characteristic feature of the first production blocks was a modified rear canopy with increased visibility to the rear. It was powered by an Allison V-1710 V12 engine. In British and Allied terminology the corresponding machines were designated Kittyhawk. The Royal Australian Air Force deployed the P-40 above all in the Pacific area, where the machines often carried special national insignia and markings different from American practice, and it is precisely this difference that makes such a sheet interesting for a modeler, because the decals included with kits tend to be American.

Tips for applying the decals

Always apply a gloss layer under the decals, because a matte surface is the most frequent cause of silvering. Cut the subjects out closely, soak briefly in lukewarm water and let them slide off the paper onto the model rather than carrying them with tweezers. Apply decal softener in thin layers and give it time, above all across the panel lines on the fuselage and across the ribbing of the wing. On aircraft with a pronounced camouflage pattern it pays to place the decals only after the whole camouflage is finished and before the picking out of the lines. Finally seal the decals with clear coat and choose a matte or slightly satin appearance according to how worn you want the machine.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of the P-40 in 1:48 who want an affiliation other than American
  • Anyone interested in equipment deployed in the Pacific area
  • Modelers for whom the decals from the kit are not suitable or have aged
  • Those who build a collection of aircraft of one user

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of schemes is stated on the box of the sheet. The theme is given by the name.

The theme is the same, but these are two separate sheets printed for different scales. Decals from one scale cannot be used on a model in the other, so choose according to your kit.

It was the last main production version of the P-40 family, lightened and with a modified rear canopy on the first production blocks. In British and Allied nomenclature the corresponding machines were designated Kittyhawk.

Yes, the P-40N kit itself in 1:48, paints and the usual modeling chemicals. For the application, gloss clear coat, decal softener and matte clear coat at the end come in handy.
