About product

The heaviest single-engine fighter of the war

The Thunderbolt weighed over seven tons loaded and the radial R-2800 gave it over two thousand horsepower. The turbocharger did not lie by the engine but as far back as behind the cockpit, so the air traveled through the fuselage there and back along long ducting. The razorback version, as it is called, still carried a tall spine behind the cockpit and a framed canopy. In its armament it had eight heavy machine guns distributed in the wings with staggered muzzles.

A breakdown of the contents

The set brings a mask for the face of the glazing, a pair of national insignia masks and eight metal weapons. The shapes are derived from the Tamiya kit.

What tools to have ready

Eight barrels mean eight holes in the leading edge. The work cannot be done without a hand drill; a set of bits around six to eight tenths of a millimeter and a needle file for cleaning up the edge come in handy. Then tweezers with a straight fine tip are needed, thicker cyanoacrylate glue and a piece of masking tape with which the wing is temporarily covered so that the bit does not slip on the glossy surface. A sliding ruler stop or a simple paper strip with marks is useful too, because the muzzles are not in one straight line and by eye the spacings will be missed.

What work is taken away and what is added

Drilling and turning plastic tubes, which break under load, falls away. What is added, on the contrary, is accurate measuring out and the need to work with the wing before closing the halves, so that it can be checked where the shank of the barrel passes inside. Anyone who leaves this step for the end usually finds that the bit is resting against an internal rib.

FAQ

Behind the cockpit an unbroken tall fuselage spine continued, which recalled the back of a wild boar. The later form had it lowered.

Eight pieces, that is the full number the Thunderbolt carried. Four go into the left and four into the right wing.

Yes. The metal shank needs a hole of its own, usually around seven tenths of a millimeter. The molded indications of the muzzles have to be removed first.

Prepare the holes with the wing opened up, but fit the barrels themselves only after spraying and varnishing, so that paint does not get into them.
