Before the Mustang received a bubble canopy, the glazing above the pilot was divided by a dense network of metal frames. Modelers use a nickname for it derived from a birdcage, and not by chance: this canopy is one of the most laborious items of the whole build. The P-51B version flew with it over Europe from the spring of 1944, where it was criticized at first mainly for the limited view to the rear, which some units answered by fitting a bulged British hood.
The cut pieces cover the individual areas between the frames of the canopy and the windshield, and discs for the wheel hubs are added to them. The material is a thin vinyl that follows the slight bulge of the glazing without wrinkling. The dimensions correspond to the plastic parts of the Tamiya P-51B model in the same scale, which is a separate item; without the matching plastic kit you therefore have no use for the cut pieces.
Wash the glazing in lukewarm water with detergent before masking and let it dry in the air rather than with a cloth. Transfer the cut pieces with the tip of a knife or with a toothpick and press them down from the center outward. The spraying of the inner cockpit shade is followed by the fuselage color; keep both coats thin so that no step forms along the edge. Apply the wheel discs only after the landing gear has been assembled, because you will find their center more easily that way.
Do not throw the leftover waste material from the sheet away. Narrow strips of vinyl come in useful for masking boundaries between shades on the fuselage, and the circular cutouts will serve when spraying small rings around openings. With the early version of the Mustang it also pays to decide in advance whether you will build a machine with the original canopy, because later modifications changed the shape of the whole enclosure.
