About product

North American P-51B Mustang (1:48, Eduard)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the early-production American fighter North American P-51B Mustang in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The model depicts the early version with the characteristic framed (birdcage) cockpit canopy, which preceded the later bulged Malcolm Hood and the fully framed canopy of the P-51D. It is a classic injection-molded kit that calls for ordinary modeling skills. Eduard releases this type in several editions (among them the ProfiPACK with photo-etch and masks, and the simpler Weekend) — check the exact edition, package contents, and number of marking options against the manufacturer's part number for this item.

The real subject

The North American P-51 Mustang was one of the most significant fighters of the Second World War. The P-51B version was the first widely deployed variant powered by the license-built Packard/Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which gave the aircraft excellent high-altitude performance. Thanks to their long range, Mustangs escorted Allied bombers deep over occupied Europe and contributed significantly to achieving air superiority. Early P-51Bs still had the framed cockpit canopy with poorer rearward visibility, which was addressed with modifications on later aircraft.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the sprues and glue with thin liquid plastic cement. Paint and highlight the cockpit interior before closing the fuselage, and mask the clear framed canopy when spraying. Apply a primer and paint with an airbrush; natural-metal aircraft reward a polished metallic finish, while others carried an olive-drab camouflage. After gloss varnish, apply decals and highlight the panel lines with a wash.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American Second World War fighters
  • Anyone interested in early Mustang versions with the framed canopy
  • Modelers with basic experience building 1:48 scale aircraft
  • Fans of the USAAF Eighth Air Force's escort fighters

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
