Wheels are among the parts where the difference between plastic and resin shows fastest. This set from Eduard offers the main wheels of the B and C versions of the Mustang in 1:48 scale with what is called a block tread – a pattern made up of regular square blocks across the tread. The set replaces the wheels from the box; it does not form an aircraft model on its own.
Mustangs with the razorback spine behind the cockpit used tires from several makers and with different patterns during the war. The block tread appeared often and is one of the features easily recognized in period photographs. The look of the wheels strongly influences the overall impression of a model standing on a base, because it is the only place where the aircraft touches the ground.
The procedure is simple, but it rewards care. Wash the wheels, cut the casting block off the underside of the tire and level the area so the wheel stands straight. Paint the tire and the hub separately and mask the boundary between them with tape or with liquid mask. A gray-black shade looks more convincing on rubber than pure black. A light dusting on the lower parts finishes the job, so the wheel does not look like it came out of a shop window.
Eduard also produces a second tread variant on the same subject; compare which one matches your aircraft before you choose.
