The North American P-51D Mustang was one of the most widespread American fighters of the closing period of the Second World War and became famous above all as an escort fighter for bomber formations. The word Early refers to the early configuration, whose cockpit differed in details of its equipment from later machines. On the Mustang the cockpit is clearly visible, because the bubble canopy leaves an unusually open view into the pilot's station.
The set brings colored three-dimensional elements for the cockpit interior. It is not a flat print: the elements have a raised structure, so that once applied they give the instrument panel and the side walls a depth that hand painting alone creates only with difficulty in this scale. The scope of the set and the placement of the individual elements are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The elements of the QD range are printed on decal backing paper and have no adhesive layer of their own. A decal softener or fixer does not belong with them, as the chemicals would attack the printed resin. Cut the part out of the sheet, hold it in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slide it off the paper into place with tweezers or the tip of a blade. Leave the surfaces under the elements smooth, painted and degreased; a coat of gloss varnish such as Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 improves adhesion considerably. Slide the element in from one edge and press it down with a soft tool so that no air stays under it; on an uneven surface a drop of super glue helps.
The set suits modelers who want the cockpit finished quickly and still readable, and also those who do not trust themselves to paint tiny dials with a brush. It pays off above all on a model with an open pilot's station. The package contains the elements of the set only; the model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
