About product

KARAYA 1:48 Parabellum LMG 14/17 late - two machine guns in resin

The set contains two pieces of the German Parabellum LMG 14/17 aircraft machine gun in the late form, in 1:48 scale, cast in resin. It is not a kit of an airplane but an accessory with which you replace the coarser plastic weapon from a kit or equip the open observer's position. In 1:48 scale the weapon is a small but very exposed element: it sits on a ring mount right in view and its workmanship markedly affects the impression of the whole model. Resin handles the thin walls of the cooling jacket and the fine details of the breech substantially better than injected plastic.

The real subject

The Parabellum LMG 14 was a German aircraft machine gun of 7.92 mm caliber, derived from a heavy machine gun but markedly lightened and adapted for firing from a flexible mount. It was used by the observers of two-seat aircraft and by airship crews. The later form designated 14/17 differs from the earlier one above all in the design of the barrel jacket, which lightened and simplified the weapon further, which is why modeling sets distinguish an early and a late form. Choosing between them makes sense according to the period into which you place your aircraft.

Building and painting tips

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, as resin does not break off but cracks. Do the sanding wet and with your airways protected. They are bonded exclusively with super glue, which you should dose with a pin. Painting: a thin primer, a dark shade of gun steel and careful edge highlighting with a dry brush or a graphite pencil. Touch in the wooden parts of the stock with a brush. Glue the weapon onto the model only at the end of the build, so that it is not damaged during handling.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of First World War aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to replace the coarse plastic weapon from a kit
  • Anyone interested in German aircraft machine guns and their variants
  • Modelers with basic experience of resin castings

The set is an accessory, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. These are two resin machine guns with which you complete or improve an already built or part-built model of an aircraft in 1:48 scale.

It refers to the late form of the machine gun, which differs from the early one above all in the design of the barrel jacket. Choose according to the period into which you place the aircraft.

Wash them in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and do the sanding wet. They are bonded with super glue, as cement for plastic does not work on resin.

At the end of the build, ideally after varnishing. A machine gun on a ring mount is exposed and is easily damaged during further handling of the model.
