A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It deals with the Schürzen protective plates hung around the turret of the German Pz.Kpfw. III medium tank. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit. It is small but shows a great deal in the result: the plastic version of the same plates tends to be several times thicker in scale than they were in reality, and on the silhouette of the turret that is noticed at once.
Schürzen were thin steel plates hung on frames at a standoff from the armor. Around the turret they formed a continuous ring with cut-outs for the gun and the vision ports. The purpose was to set off or dampen a hit early, before it reached the armor proper. The plates were deliberately thin and were easily damaged, so on machines in the field you routinely meet bent pieces or whole sections of the ring missing.
The key is keeping things true. The ring is made up of plates and their hangers, which have to keep the same height and spacing, or the whole will look wavy. It pays to assemble all the parts dry first and only then glue them, ideally segment by segment with a check against a flat surface. It is bonded with a thicker super glue, which gives you a few seconds to line things up. If you want to show battle wear, bend individual plates slightly over a round object or leave one out altogether; unlike plastic, metal takes that without cracking.
This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
