The solo performance on the Rafale belongs to the most closely followed thing European air shows have to offer. The aircraft gets graphics of its own for it every season, designed by an artist in cooperation with the pilot, and it is the only machine in the whole air force whose appearance comes about primarily for the sake of the spectators. The machine with the code 4-IM filled this role in the 2019 season and its coloring stayed in service for 2020 as well.
Two seasons in one coat are rather an exception with this performance. Most display Rafale machines carry their graphics for a single season and then return to ordinary gray. That is precisely why this real subject is interesting: it had a career twice as long as the others and correspondingly more photographs of it exist.
A special coat has a clear purpose with a solo performance. The spectator on the ground watches a sequence of maneuvers in which the aircraft keeps turning, and striking graphics help to keep track of the attitude of the machine. The esthetics are only the second matter, even though it is exactly that which decides whether a coloring is remembered.
Display colorings tend to cover the whole surface and the decals therefore cover a large part of the airframe. That puts demands on the preparation: the surface has to be smooth, without graininess and in gloss, otherwise the edges will draw through once dry. It also pays to proceed in sections and to let the varnish set between the individual pieces.
The real subject is the single-seat C version, which the French Air Force has long used for solo performances.
