SIAI SF-260 — masking set 1:48 (Peewit)

A set of self-adhesive masking templates in 1:48 scale from the maker Peewit, intended for the SIAI SF-260 trainer and light combat aircraft. It is not a kit, not a resin accessory and not decals — you are buying precisely cut masks with which you cover the glazed areas before the model is sprayed.

What the masks are for

The cockpit frames can be masked with hand-cut tape as well, but on curved canopies that is slow and thankless work. Pre-cut masks save that time and, above all, give straight, sharp edges along the whole length of a frame. The masks are shaped for one particular form of the glazing, so check before buying that they match the kit you are actually building — the shape of the canopy differs between toolings. Whether the set also contains masks for the inner side of the glazing or for the wheels is stated on the box.

The procedure for use

• Degrease the glazing and let it dry completely; on a greasy surface the mask will not hold.
• Lift the mask off the carrier film with tweezers and lay it in place without stretching it.
• Press the edges down with a toothpick or a blunt stick, above all in the corners.
• Cover the rest of the model with tape or masking putty.
• Apply the paint in thin coats from a distance, so that it does not creep under the edge.
• Remove the masks as soon as possible after the paint has dried, while it is still fresh — the edge then stays sharp.
