About product

Sopwith Camel Comic 1:48 - an Eduard plastic kit

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. The subject is the version of the Sopwith Camel known as the Comic, that is the conversion of the production fighter biplane for night use. The code series of this boxing corresponds at Eduard to the ProfiPACK edition, which as standard adds photo-etched parts and painting masks to the plastic parts.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was a single-seat fighter biplane with a rotary engine, a wooden frame and fabric covering. On the night conversion known as the Comic the armament moved above the upper wing onto hinged mounts so that the flashes of the shots would not dazzle the pilot, and the seat moved rearward so that he could reach the guns. Machines in this configuration served in the defense of British airspace at the close of the First World War. Its hallmarks are the short rear fuselage, the deep fuselage and the pronounced dihedral of the lower wing.

Building and painting tips

A biplane is built differently from a monoplane kit: first finish and paint the cockpit and the engine section, and only then close the fuselage up. Seat the lower wing and the struts exactly according to the template, otherwise the upper wing cannot be aligned. Run the rigging between the wings with fine fishing line or rigging thread only once the clear coat has dried. Fabric covering shows well with thin coats from an airbrush and a subtle emphasis of the ribs. Wooden parts look convincing when oil artwork is applied over a light base and covered with clear coat. Apply the decals onto a gloss base with a decal softener, and a final coat of matte clear will even the surface out.

FAQ

The armament moved above the upper wing onto hinged mounts and the pilot's seat moved rearward. The conversion came about for night use so that the flashes of the shots would not dazzle the pilot.

The number of parts and the choice of color schemes are given on the box and in the enclosed instructions.

Rather for a more experienced builder. A biplane calls for precise seating of the struts and for rigging between the wings.

Yes, glue and paints. For the rigging, fine fishing line or rigging thread suits well.
