About product

Sopwith Camel with the Le Rhone engine 1:48 - Eduard Big Sin accessory set

This item is not an aircraft kit. It is an accessory set from the Czech maker Eduard from the Big Sin range, that is a bundle in which the manufacturer brings together several of its resin accessories for one particular subject in a single box. What the set covers is given by its name: the engine section, specifically the Le Rhone rotary engine that powered part of the Camels. The basic plastic Sopwith Camel kit in 1:48 scale has to be bought separately.

Why reach for resin: castings hold sharper detail than injection-molded plastic, because the mold does not have to deal with ejector pins and parting lines in the same way. On a rotary engine, which stays clearly visible on a finished Camel, the difference in the fineness of the cylinder fins and the valve gear is obvious at first glance.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel F.1 was a single-seat British fighter biplane used from 1917. Its characteristic feature was the concentration of the weight of the engine, the armament, the pilot and the fuel into a short forward section of the fuselage, which made the aircraft exceptionally agile but also demanding to fly. The armament consisted of a pair of synchronized Vickers machine guns, whose cowling gave the type its nickname. The Camel was built with several types of rotary engine, besides the Le Rhone also the Clerget, the Bentley and the Gnome, and the engine is the main external distinguishing feature of the individual machines.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release residue, because otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, and never snap them. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); ordinary cement for plastic does not work on resin. Protect your airways when sanding, as resin dust should not be inhaled. Apply a primer before painting; the engine looks best with a dark base, metallic shades and a fine dry brush on the fins.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Sopwith Camel in 1:48 scale who want the exposed engine section at the current state of the art.
  • Builders of First World War aircraft, on which the engine is a visible feature of the model.
  • Those who prefer a ready-made bundle of accessories to several separate sets.
  • More advanced modelers with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate.

The set is an accessory for a kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set for a model. The basic Sopwith Camel kit in 1:48 scale has to be obtained separately.

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Ordinary cement for plastic models does not dissolve resin and therefore will not hold.

Yes, wash them in lukewarm soapy water because of the mold release residue and then apply a primer. Without that the paint will flake.

The distinguishing feature is the type of rotary engine given in the name. The Camel was built with several types of engine, so choose the one that matches the machine you are building.
