Amodel 1:72 Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer is a plastic kit of the single record-breaking aircraft that was built, with which a solo nonstop flight around the world was made in 2005.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the record-breaking Global Flyer from the Ukrainian maker Amodel. The set holds plastic parts, a separate sprue of clear parts and decals for the unmistakable white finish with its blue company markings. Thanks to the large span it is an impressive model that catches the eye on a shelf at once.
The Global Flyer was designed by Burt Rutan and a single example was built. The aircraft has a composite structure with a central cabin, two long booms and a wing of great span whose inside forms practically one large fuel tank. It is powered by a single jet engine mounted above the cabin. At the turn of February and March 2005 Steve Fossett used it to make a solo nonstop flight around the world without refueling, which was an absolute record at the time. After the end of its career the aircraft became a museum exhibit.
The long slender booms and the wing are prone to bending, so glue them on a flat surface and watch the symmetry of the dihedral while the cement hardens. A white surface has nowhere to hide a flaw, so fill the seams carefully, sand them with fine paper and lay down a white base coat under the covering finish. The blue lines can be done with decals, but on the long stripes it pays to use a decal softener and to lay the decal down in sections. Weathering has no justification on this aircraft, and the model looks best clean.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
