Pre-cut films for the three-part canopy of the Spitfire Mk IX in 1:48 scale. They mask the outer and the inner side of all the clear parts, and a set of roundel masks and a decal sheet are enclosed. Intended for Hasegawa plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk IX came about as a quick answer to German fighters with more powerful engines. A Merlin 61 with a two-stage supercharger was built into the airframe of the Mark V, the nose grew longer and an intercooler was added under the cowling. The result exceeded expectations: a stopgap solution was built in greater numbers than any other version except the Mark V itself and served right to the end of the war.
The canopy of the Mk IX is formed by a fixed windscreen, a sliding hood and a fixed rear part. Each of them has a different curvature and a different thickness of plastic, and for masking that matters more than their size, because the film has to sit on a different radius on every part. Inside the windscreen there is also a separate armored panel, which is better left clear. The set carries masks for both sides, so the inner frames get the cockpit shade and the outside the camouflage.
The work goes from the tail: first the fixed rear part, then the windscreen and the sliding section last, so that it can be set aside until the end of the build. Anyone who wants an open cockpit will appreciate that the reverse of the frames does not have to be touched up with a brush and that the edge stays as sharp as on the outside. An open cockpit is a rewarding detail on a British fighter, because it shows the seat and the instrument panel too.
