About product

Spitfire Mk.V in the markings of squadron leaders - decals 1:48 (DK Decals)

The sheet is an accessory for a kit, not a model. It is produced for 1:48 scale and is defined thematically by the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V in the markings of squadron leaders. How many schemes it contains and whether it adds national insignia or technical lettering is stated on the box of the sheet.

The real subject and what makes the theme different

The Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerous version of the type, with a Merlin 45 series engine and several wing standards that differed in armament; in later service it also appeared with clipped wingtips for better agility at low altitude and with a tropical filter under the nose on machines deployed in the Mediterranean and Pacific areas. A squadron leader, unlike a wing commander, flew a machine of his own unit, so the aircraft carried the standard pair of squadron code letters and an individual letter, to which a personal emblem or a small additional symbol was often added.

Tips for applying the decals

The basis is a glossy surface under the decal, otherwise silvering appears. Cut the subjects out closely so that as little carrier film as possible is left, and soak briefly in lukewarm water; then let the decal slide off the paper onto the model itself so that you do not tear it with tweezers. Apply decal softener in thin layers and let it take hold on its own, especially across panel lines and rivets. With large code letters across the fuselage, take care that the letters on both sides sit at the same height, as asymmetry shows more than a small error in shade. Once dry, seal the decals with clear coat, pick out the lines and only at the end choose a matte or satin appearance.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire Mk.V in 1:48 who want the markings of a particular squadron
  • Modelers for whom the decals from the kit are not suitable or are damaged
  • Anyone interested in the theme of commanders' aircraft with their unit codes retained
  • Modelers who already have experience of a glossy base and decal softener

This is a decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of schemes is stated on the box of the sheet. The theme is given by the name.

A different group of aircraft and a different way of marking. A squadron leader's machine carried the code letters of its own unit, whereas a wing commander's aircraft usually did not and used personal initials.

The markings relate to the aircraft, not to the standard of the kit. The particular appearance of the machines on the sheet is shown by the illustration on the box; before buying, compare whether your kit matches the Mk.V standard you want.

Always apply them onto gloss clear coat rather than a matte surface, cut them close to the subject and use decal softener. Once dry, coat the decals over, and only then give the model a matte finish.
