A diorama accessory from the Czech maker Hauler in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft but separate equipment for a scene: two steel shipping containers of the kind used for storing and moving material at airfields, in workshops, in stores and in rear areas.
Containers are a rewarding element because they fill an empty place without overpowering the main model. Stood in a row along a wall they create a background; open and crammed with material they carry a story of the scene instead. Two pieces let you work with contrast - one freshly painted, the other scuffed and rusty.
Before gluing, try the arrangement out dry on the base and look at the scene from the eye height of a figure, not from above. Never set a container exactly parallel to the edge of the base; a slight turn gives a scene naturalness. Under the edge that meets the terrain, apply a thin layer of modeling compound or paste, so that the accessory does not look laid down but stands in soil or on gravel.
According to the material of the parts, begin by washing the remains of the mold release agent off or by degreasing with spirit, and apply a primer. Choose a base color darker than would seem right - a light shade looks flat on a small area. Rust is best done in layers: first a dark wash into the corners and under the stiffeners, then lighter orange-brown tones dotted on by drybrushing, and finally pigment into the lower part of the walls, where water splashes. Dents on the edges are enough suggested with a hard pencil or with silver paint from a pigment, sparingly.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
