The castings replace the plastic kit wheels; they have a sharper tread pattern and a wheel rim without a mold parting line, which shows on the landing gear even after painting. The Sukhoi Su-17 grew out of the older Su-7 and differs from it in a wing with variable geometry of the outer panels. It let the aircraft handle takeoff and landing better and carry a heavier combat load, while the fuselage and the fighter-bomber concept stayed close to its predecessor. Export machines carried the Su-22 designation and differed in equipment and powerplant; in the West the reporting name Fitter is used for the whole family.
