This is an injection-molded plastic kit of the TBD-1 Devastator carrier-borne torpedo bomber in 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The modern mold offers a fuselage and wings broken into sections, a well worked out cockpit and an engine section with fine detail. Photo-etched parts and masking film for the glazing are included in the box as well. The model captures the characteristic look of this early carrier aircraft with its glazed canopy for a three-man crew.
The Douglas TBD Devastator entered service in 1937 as one of the first modern all-metal carrier aircraft of the US Navy with retractable landing gear. By the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, however, it was already obsolete. It became tragically famous during the Battle of Midway in 1942, when the torpedo squadrons equipped with Devastators suffered devastating losses. After Midway it was quickly withdrawn and replaced by the more modern Grumman TBF Avenger.
Glue the parts with thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched items with cyanoacrylate glue. Give the extensive glazed canopy careful attention - mask it with the masks supplied before painting. Run a gloss coat over the surface before the decals; a matte coat evens the surface out at the end. The prewar and early war US Navy schemes (the yellow upper wing surfaces, for example) offer rewarding color combinations; shade the panels gently with an airbrush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
