This is an accessory for figures in 1:48 scale, not a kit of a model. The set contains castings of American combat boots of the M43 pattern, that is leather boots with an extended cuff fastened with buckles. The parts are fitted onto the legs of a figure during a conversion, or find a use as a set-aside item of equipment on the base of a diorama.
The American combat boot of the 1943 pattern came about by joining an ankle-high boot with a leather cuff, which wrapped around the calf and fastened with a pair of buckles. That did away with separate gaiters, which had to be pulled on separately. On this footwear the leather was worked with the grain side inward, so the outer surface is rough and matte — unlike the smooth, polishable leather of older boots. The pattern replaced the older combination of an ankle-high boot and gaiters gradually, and both solutions therefore occurred alongside each other for some time; when building a particular scene it pays off to compare a period reference.
Separate the castings from the casting block with a fine saw, level the surface left after the cut with a file and try dry how the boots follow on from the legs of the figure. Glue resin parts with super glue; glue for plastic does not hold on them. Before painting, wash the casting in lukewarm water with a detergent because of the release agent from the mold. Paint matte, with no sheen — rough leather does not shine. Draw the buckles and straps out with a dark wash and a light touch of a lighter tone, and complete the bottoms of the boots with a pigment according to the terrain the figure stands on. A glossy surface is the most frequent mistake with this type of footwear.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Paints, glue and further parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
