The Bf 109E-3 express fit mask set in the one-sided rendition deals with the frames of the canopy and the windscreen on the Hobby Boss kit in 1:48 scale. The angular glazing of the Emil consists of small areas separated by heavy frames, and measuring out tape by hand on it takes more time than the painting itself. Pre-cut shapes shorten this part of the build to a few minutes.
The Emil was the first really widespread form of the fighter with a liquid-cooled engine and an angular canopy. The E-3 version differed from the earlier machines mainly in the makeup of its armament and became the typical representative of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. Collectors reach for it often, because it appears in many striking color schemes.
Small areas of glazing are treacherous in that a mask easily shifts by a fraction of a millimeter and the frame comes out lopsided. It helps to lay it on dry, align it against one edge and only then press the rest down. Before painting, wipe the dust off with adhesive tape and spray at a right angle so the paint does not seep under the edge. Removal is easiest while the layer is still fresh. Anyone building the Emil for the first time will appreciate avoiding the most common beginners' mistake, a smeared transition between the frame and the glass.
