About product

British I-class destroyer in 1:500 scale from Plastyk

This kit in 1:500 scale captures the British I-class destroyer, that is one of the interwar series that formed the backbone of the light forces of the Royal Navy. It is an undemanding model of small dimensions from the Polish manufacturer Plastyk, supplied unassembled and unpainted. Check the number of parts, the package contents and the form of the hull on the box.

The real subject

The I-class destroyers belonged to the series of standard British destroyers that came about in the 1930s in alphabetical groups. They were fast ships of medium size built for escorting task forces, for scouting and for torpedo attack. The main gun armament was made up of guns of around 120 mm caliber in open or lightly shielded positions, backed by anti-aircraft armament and multiple torpedo tube mounts on the deck between the funnels and the stern. The silhouette was typically British: a low smooth hull, a raised forward superstructure and two funnels. During the Second World War the ships of this class served very intensively, especially in convoy duty and anti-submarine warfare, where their speed and maneuverability came fully into their own.

Building and painting tips

In 1:500 scale the ship is small, so keep the build simple and concentrate on the silhouette and on a clean surface. Fill and sand the joints on the hull, otherwise they will stand out under a uniform finish. Fit the superstructures, the funnels and the masts only after the hull has been painted, because the surfaces are easier to reach. Raise the detail with small touches: rigging suggested with fine wire or thread and a fine dark wash on the deck and around the superstructures. Lay the British gray shades on with an airbrush in thin coats and set the deck apart by a tone. The ship looks good on a simple stand or on a water surface made of modeling compound, where a small model gains in visual size.

FAQ

Check the form of the hull on the box. The model can be displayed on a stand or set into a water surface, depending on which form the package contains.

Yes. The model is small, simple and straightforward to build, so it also suits as a first ship. What helps most is careful filling of the hull joints and a thin finish.

British interwar destroyers were built in alphabetical groups, where the letter designates a whole series of ships of similar form. The I class is one of these groups from the second half of the 1930s.
