Masking set for the A6M2b Model 21 Zero

Precisely shaped masks for a model of the Japanese A6M2b Model 21 Zero carrier fighter in 1:32 scale. The set is prepared for the Tamiya kit and is supplied in the version for both sides of the glazing.

Why mask both sides

On the real aircraft the canopy framing is painted on the inside as well as the outside, but on a model the inner side is usually skimped. The difference shows: if the frame stays clear on the inside, light comes through the glazing and the canopy looks like glass with no structure. The Zero also has a heavily framed canopy with a row of ribs, and in 1:32 scale every one of them is right under the eye. Cutting that many strips of tape by hand means hours of work, and one slip of the blade ruins the whole part.

How to use the masks

• Wash the glazing before masking and let it dry; a mask will not hold on a greasy surface.
• Lift the pieces off the backing with pointed tweezers and lay them exactly along the edges of the frame.
• Press the masks down with a blunt wooden stick all the way around so that paint does not creep under the edge.
• The masks go on the model before spraying, not after the paint has dried.
• Spray the cockpit color first and only then the exterior shades.
• Remove the masks as soon as the paint is dry to the touch; in a fully cured coat the edge chips off easily.
• Wipe off adhesive residue with a cotton swab moistened with water and polish gently.

A masking set is supplied. The aircraft kit, paints, glue and masking tape are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
