The combination of dark blue and deep yellow has been the recognition mark of the American demonstration team for decades. The package contains the yellow lettering, letters and numbers of machines one to seven. Small stencils, logos and the badge on the nose are not part of it.
The team came about shortly after the Second World War and the Hornet served with it longer than any previous type. The aircraft of the formation differ from combat ones in the removed cannon barrel and a modified control stick; otherwise they are standard machines. The formation flies at separations measured in tens of centimeters, so the marking has to stay legible even for the pilot alongside, not only for the spectators below. That is precisely why the lettering is so large and contrasting.
Deep yellow on a dark base needs a light intermediate coat, as otherwise it will sink into the blue. The carrier layer is flexible and does not crease even on the curve of the nose. Proceed by spraying white under the mask once the blue has dried, only then the yellow on top of it, and take the mask off all at once. The individual parts are laid with tweezers and it pays to watch the vertical by the engraved lines. Let the white intermediate coat cure properly, as otherwise the yellow will stay cloudy.
