Stencils for the colorful markings of the VF-1 Wolfpack fighter squadron on early F-14 Tomcat machines, that is from the time before gray low-visibility markings came in. Cut to 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The VF-1 squadron was one of the first two units of the US Navy to re-equip with the heavy carrier-borne F-14 fighter in the 1970s. Its badge with the wolf's head and the striking color bands on the rudders belong among the most memorable artwork of the Cold War.
The early years of service were marked by saturated colors: white undersides, glossy gray spines, red or yellow accents and national insignia at full size. Only in the 1980s was this look replaced by matte gray shades and markings barely distinguishable from the base. The set aims exclusively at the earlier, colorful phase.
A letter sixty centimeters high on the real machine takes up one and a quarter centimeters on the model, and a squadron badge a meter across over two centimeters. At such sizes cut film holds even opposing internal shapes. The lower limit of usability lies roughly at two millimeters; below that thin bridges turn into a ragged trace and it is safer to solve the edge with a printed decal.
The lighter tone is sprayed first; once it has dried, the stencil is laid on and the darker complement is added. The base has to be smooth and free of grease from your fingers, otherwise the paint bleeds. With the color bands on the rudders it is worth checking whether their slant matches the shape of the particular model, because individual kits differ slightly in the outline of the tail surfaces. Plastic parts and paint shades are not included.
