Masks for the patterned so-called digital camouflage of the Russian Su-57 fighter in 1:72 scale. Pre-cut shapes of the small fields for spraying with an airbrush.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-57 is one of the fifth-generation aircraft and first took to the air in 2010, still under the designation of the development program. The machine has widely spaced engines, movable leading-edge sections of the wing and surfaces angled so as to reflect the wave away from its source. Its most conspicuous feature, though, remains the finish: gray surfaces broken up into small fields that resemble enlarged picture elements. In everyday speech this pattern has come to be called digital, even though it is only a grid made up of several close gray tones.
The grid has hundreds of small fields, and cutting the tape by hand would mean hours of work in a small scale with an uncertain result. Pre-cut shapes remove this obstacle and, above all, make sure that the spacing of the fields does not shrink where the hand loses patience.
The shades are close to one another, so spray lightly and from a medium distance; a heavy coat would build a ridge under the mask that would stand out as an outline once it is lifted. It also pays to keep a steady pressure, because fluctuations show up more on small fields than on the large surface of a wing. Once the masks are off, the whole surface is unified with a thin clear coat.
The machines carried several variants of the grid during testing and after entering service. Before building it is therefore worth choosing a particular aircraft and sticking to photographs of it.
The model is turned around a lot during the work, so it helps to secure it in a holder and to spray the surfaces always at right angles from above. A coat put on at an angle leaves a shadow under the edge that blurs the grid needlessly.
