A set of masking films for the gray finish of the F-22 Raptor in 1:48 scale, with the stars of the US Air Force added.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Raptor was designed to see an opponent before it appears on his own screen. It combines sharp fuselage edges, internal weapons bays and supersonic flight without afterburner. The series machines wear a two-shade gray whose border follows the shape of the airframe and breaks differently on each panel, so the eye has trouble judging the machine's real distance.
The transition between the two gray tones has a surprisingly precise course on this type and cannot be guessed by eye. Doing it by hand means tracing the border from a drawing, transferring it onto tape, cutting it out and then repeating the same thing mirrored on the other half. One bad curve means spraying over and starting again. Ready-cut pieces cancel that loop; the border is finished and identical on the left and the right.
Shapes for the national stars and bars are included as well. Sprayed markings lie level with the paint, have no glossy edge of carrier film and carry no risk of silvering on a matte surface. Degrease the surface before work and press the film down with a soft tool so that the edge seats. The paint is applied in thin coats, as a heavy coat creates a step at the edge that shows once the film is lifted.
It pays to polish the airframe beforehand with a very fine abrasive. On smooth paint the edge of the film seats more tightly and the paint does not bleed under it.
