The Nakajima J1N1 Gekko was a twin-engined aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. It came about as a long-range escort fighter, but in service it proved itself mainly in reconnaissance and in the role of a night fighter, for which it was given armament pointing obliquely upwards. The Allies listed it under the name Irving. The Type 11 designation sets one of the production versions of this type apart.
The package holds masking parts in 1:48 scale for spraying the national insignia and the other markings. The colored areas thus come about in paint itself and no carrier film of a decal is left on the surface, the kind that likes to show through and shine on matte finishes. Which particular insignia and lettering the mask covers and in what order they are sprayed is stated in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer; it is worth checking suitability for your kit before the build.
Stick the mask onto a dry, degreased finish, otherwise the paint will run under the edge. Press the edges down carefully and spray perpendicular to the surface in several thin coats. With insignia that have a light border it pays to spray a light base first and only then the darker color over it, otherwise the shade underneath shows through. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has gone tacky; the longer it stays on the model, the harder it comes away.
The set is for modelers who want their markings sprayed rather than stuck on, and for those who are bothered by the shiny edges of decals on a matte surface. It also suits where the surface of the model is to be weathered later, because a sprayed insignia takes more work than a decal.
